Frozen Lens: Capturing a Winter Sunset
Winter photography is a tale of contrasts, where icy landscapes meet the warm colours of the setting sun, creating stunning scenes in a clash between ice and fire. The temperature had dropped to -8°C that day, and the wind didn’t hold back—sharp gusts that cut through layers, making even the simplest task of holding my camera feel like a challenge. My fingers, stiff and uncooperative, fumbled with the controls, while the lens frosted over, challenging me to keep my focus, both literally and figuratively.
But as the sun dipped closer to the horizon, all discomfort faded into the background. The sky ignited with fiery shades of orange and red, slowly dissolving into the cool blues above the snowy ground. There’s a quiet magic in that transition, a fleeting moment where the cold feels distant, and all that matters is the scene unfolding before your eyes. The snow, blanketed in soft light, seemed to glow from within, and just above it all, a faint crescent moon appeared, subtle yet perfect, completing the composition with its timeless elegance.
I won’t pretend that waiting in the cold was easy. It wasn’t. The wind was relentless, and more than once, I questioned my sanity. But photography isn’t always about comfort; it’s about chasing moments that stir something inside you. This was one of those moments.
